OCup #4 – Fall Classic Results
Congratulations to all our paddlers, both Masters and youth who competed, at OCup #4 – Fall Classic this pastSaturday at the Sydenham Lake Canoe Club. Even though the conditions were miserable (wet, cold & windy) the RHCC team had an excellent showing.
The morning events were new to RHCC, with a 6000M team pursuit in various categories and age groups made up of teams of 2 or 3 paddlers. The RHCC team of David Stewart, Oskar Morawski and Niko Tsaousidis had a combined first place finish in the U15 Men & Women K-1/C-1 race, with our second team of Eric Weston and Cameron Lang finishing 4th, only 18 seconds behind the third place finishers. David, Oskar and Niko also had the top 3 individual times for the event.
Special kudos to Liz Zoubakine who tipped her boat just at the starting line, got back in and eventually caught back up to her pursuit team members Katy Stewart and Brooklyn Wodehouse, whose team finished 10th overall in the U15 6000M event. Kudos as well to Ryan Reid who tipped at the far end of the course about halfway through the race, swam to a local dock, managed to drain his boat, get back in and finish the race, ending up in 12th place overall with his pursuit team member Alex Ivanov. The fourth RHCC team entry of John Reid and Isaac Nay completed the race in 14th position.
The second team pursuit race of the day was the U17 Men & Women K-1/C-1 6000M with 2 RHCC teams entered. Olivia Petroff, Connor Petroff and Brendan Rogers finished in 6th place with the second RHCC team of Sunny Willert, Jean Luc Cinq-Mars and Tula Morawska just behind them in 7th place.
Our Masters also had a strong showing in the Masters Men & Women K-1/C-1 6000M team pursuit. The team of Andrei Zoubakine, Andrew Ivanov and Miki Horvath finished first in the event with our Masters women team of Lisa Paulson and Mary Chambers finishing 6th.
The afternoon events were all 200M sprints in a knock-out format, with all races in a single category being run sequentially until the finals. First up were the U15 Men with Oskar Morawski, Cam Lang and Niko Tsaousidis making the semi-finals and finals with Niko finishing second overall, Oskar was fourth overall and Cameron finished 6th. In the U15 Women, Brooklyn Wodehouse also made it all the way through to the finals.
Next up was the U17 Men C-1 & Women K-1 200M knock-out with 3 RHCC paddlers qualifying for the final:Jean Luc Cinq-Mars, Tula Morawska and Olivia Petroff. Both Jean Luc and Tula medaled in their event with Jean Luc finishing first and Tula finishing third.
Our Masters men had another strong showing with Miki Horvath and Andrei Ivanov placing second and third respectively in the Masters Men K-1 200M final.

The Ontario Cup series consists of 4 events throughout the competitive season. In addition to OCup #4 held this past weekend, OCup #1 was a long distance event in May held at the Carleton Place Canoe Club; OCup#2 was the Ontario Team Trials held in mid-June in Welland; and OCup #3 was the Provincial Championships held in August at the Rideau Canoe Club.
Balmy Beach was the winner of the OCup Series Points which were based on the results of all four OCup events, divided by the number of club participants at each event. Richmond Hill was 7th out of 15 clubs participating.
But Richmond Hill was third in total regatta Burgee Points awarded over the series, with Balmy once again in first place and Ottawa River in second.
This is a fabulous ending to a wonderful competitive season for the Richmond Hill Canoe Club! As always, thanks must go out to our new coach, Helen Savin, who has made the RHCC team highly competitive and well-respected within the sprint racing community this season. We look forward to a long fall and winter of training & conditioning, getting ready for another strong season in 2015. Keep up the spirit and we’ll see everyone at the race course in the spring!
GO HILL GO!!!
